Shi Xiangkun (Internship Report, GR Japan, Winter 2017)

To be honest, I was a little bit nervous when I was in the office on my first day of internship. All my colleagues in the office are very professional and fluent in multiple languages, as a foreign student whose mother tongue is neither English or Japanese, I was worried whether I am qualified to work with them or can I even finish the tasks from them. However, with all the kindness and warmth from my colleagues, my nervousness was soon replaced with motivation and a strong sense of belonging. In the end, I really enjoyed the internship and didn’t even realize that my two-month internship came to the end this soon.

From the first day, we interns were immediately recruited into different project teams, we were even given the valuable chances to join in business meeting with clients. With the guidance from other experienced staff, we were deeply involved into projects from which, for the first time, I gained some first-hand knowledge about government relationship and public policies. Internship in GR Japan is a perfect opportunity to put what we learnt in university into practice and directly face the differences between textbook and practice. Due to the nature of government relations, the company work closely with Japanese government officials and Diet members, for a foreign student like me, meeting and talking with them is both exciting and educational.

Besides the working, what I like most about GR Japan is its working atmosphere, all projects are conducted through teamwork, and all team member with different backgrounds from different countries work closely with each other like friends, unlike typical Japanese companies which tend to have rigid hierarchy, I do think the friendly and free working environment in GR Japan leads to more creativity and better efficiency.

All in all, during my two-month internship, not only did I learn a lot, I also met many wonderful friends and mentors. In my one-year studying abroad here in Japan, this internship experience is definitely the highlight of it.
