Abstract:<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Tar\u014d K\u014dno, Japan<\/span>\u2019s Minister of Foreign Affairs said at the 2019 Munich Security Conference: “If the U.S. cannot be the policeman alone anymore, Japan, Europe, and other like-minded countries need to increase the burden sharing.” This public forum takes up the theme of burden-sharing, and international cooperation more generally, in an era of American decline. First, what are the implications for countries such as Japan and Denmark, a large US ally and a small NATO ally? Second, what does <\/span>\u201cburden-sharing<\/span>\u201d look like from a European and East Asian perspective? Exactly what <\/span>\u201cburdens<\/span>\u201d are to be shared, in what realms of international life, and how do we measure such efforts beyond mere military spending targets. Third, what can realistically be done, considering existing capabilities and the changing power distribution in the international system? Do new frameworks and partnerships need to be devised or can existing ones be refashioned and what are the limitations?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Speaker`s Biography:<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Christian Bueger<\/span><\/u> is Professor of International Relations at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. He is also honorary professor at the University of Seychelles, a research fellow at the University of Stellenbosch and one of the Directors of the Safe Seas network of academic institutions working on maritime security. Professor Bueger holds a PhD in International Relations from the European University Institute in Florence (2010) and a master degree in Political Science from the University of Frankfurt am Main (2002). Before joining the University of Copenhagen, he was a Professor at Cardiff University, Wales, UK, a visiting fellow at the National University of Singapore and University College London and a research fellow at the Greenwich Maritime Institute, London. His research focus is on international political sociology, practice theory, the sociology of science and expertise, ocean governance and maritime security.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Jens Ladefoged Mortensen<\/span><\/u> is Associate Professor at the Department of Political Science at the University of Copenhagen. His research focuses on International Political Economy, international institutions and international trade, especially the WTO and EU common external commercial policy and trade diplomacy. His latest research revolves around the application of new IPE approaches to the study of EU trade politics and related areas such as the geopolitics and competitiveness of the EU, the new EU bilateral trade agreements, understandings of power in economic globalization, and sustainable trade issues in global economic governance<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Professor Mikkel Vedby Rasmussen<\/span><\/u> is the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Copenhagen. Risk, crisis management, NATO-issues and strategy are his key research interests. From 2016 to 2019 Professor Rasmussen was the Head of the Political Science Department at the University of Copenhagen. From 2014 to 2015 he served as the head of the Strategy and Policy Office in the Danish Ministry of Defence. Previously, he served as the director of the Centre for Military Studies at the Department of Political Science, University of Copenhagen. Professor Rasmussen\u2019s publications include The West, Civil Society and the Construction of Peace (Palgrave Macmillan, 2003), The Risk Society at War (Cambridge University Press, 2006) and The Military\u2019s Business (Cambridge University Press, 2015).<\/span><\/p>\n
