The University of Cambridge and the University of Tokyo enjoy a long-term, cross-disciplinary partnership. An annual joint symposium has been organised since 2015 to promote academic links and collaborations.<\/p>\n
This year marks the seventh of our joint symposia. It is entitled \u201cNavigating Sustainable Development amid Uncertainty and Change\u201d and we will focus on several topics that are of mutual interest to the two universities, and to share relevant research, promote links, and discuss collaboration opportunities. These areas also have great potential to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN and the global public good.<\/p>\n
This year\u2019s joint symposium is chaired by Prof Yasushi Umeda, one of the strategic partnership leaders from the University of Tokyo. Prof Anne Ferguson-Smith, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and International Partnerships of the University of Cambridge, and Prof Kaori Hayashi, Executive Vice President of The University of Tokyo, will give opening remarks. Attendees will be able to choose a parallel session to attend from the following topics: Gender Equality, Circular Economy, and Biotechnology and Governance. Following the parallel sessions, Prof Satoshi Watanabe, Deputy Director of the Division for Global Campus Initiatives at the University of Tokyo, will conclude the event.<\/p>\n

\nGuided by the topics of “Biotechnology” and “Governance”, scholars from Cambridge and UTokyo will explore various aspects of introducing biotechnology into society.
\nDiscussions include the governance of new and emerging biotechnology by Dr. Matsuo, CSER\u2019s work on horizon-scanning and synthetic biology by Dr. Sundaram, global international processes related to biodiversity, land use over multiple generations, and the challenge of science-related policymaking by Dr. Kohsaka, and various possible future pathways of biosecurity governance by Dr. Hobson.<\/p>\n
